Terms & Conditions

Last updated: 01.04.2026

These Terms and Conditions govern the use of the Heritage and Lineage website and the commissioning of genealogy and family history services. By using this website or commissioning services from Heritage and Lineage, you agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions.

1. About Heritage and Lineage

Heritage and Lineage provides bespoke genealogy research and narrative family history writing services. Each project is individually commissioned and researched by a dedicated genealogist.

The services offered are personalised and created specifically for each client.

2. Use of This Website

The content provided on this website is for general information about the services offered by Heritage and Lineage.

Users of this website agree not to:

  • Copy or reproduce website content without permission

  • Use the website for unlawful purposes

  • Attempt to disrupt or interfere with the operation of the website

All written content on this website remains the intellectual property of Heritage and Lineage unless otherwise stated.

3. Commissioning a Service

Family history projects are commissioned individually following an initial consultation.

A project is considered confirmed when:

  • The scope of work has been agreed

  • Payment terms have been accepted

  • The required deposit has been received

Heritage and Lineage reserves the right to decline a commission where the requested work is not feasible or appropriate.

4. Fees and Payment

Pricing for genealogy research and family history writing services is provided in advance based on the scope of work.

Unless otherwise agreed, payments are structured in stages:

  • An initial deposit prior to the commencement of research

  • A second payment following completion of the research phase

  • A final payment upon completion and delivery of the commissioned work

Work will not begin until the initial deposit has been received.

All payments must be made in GBP unless otherwise agreed.

5. Timescales

The completion time for commissioned work may vary depending on:

  • The scope of genealogical research required

  • Availability and accessibility of historical records

  • The complexity of family lines being researched

Estimated timelines are provided as guidance and may change due to factors outside the control of Heritage and Lineage.

6. Research Limitations

Genealogical research depends on historical records that may be incomplete, inaccurate, damaged, or unavailable.

Heritage and Lineage cannot guarantee:

  • That specific ancestors will be located

  • That a fixed number of generations will be traced

  • That all historical records will be available

All research conclusions are based on the best available evidence at the time of investigation.

7. Accuracy of Information

Every effort is made to ensure that research findings are accurate and supported by reliable sources.

However, Heritage and Lineage cannot accept responsibility for errors or inconsistencies contained within historical documents or archival records.

Interpretation may sometimes be necessary where records are incomplete.

8. Client Responsibilities

Clients are responsible for providing information to the best of their knowledge and for responding to reasonable requests for clarification during the research process.

Delays in communication may affect project timelines.

9. Cancellations and Refunds

Due to the bespoke nature of the services provided, refunds are limited.

If it becomes clear during an initial assessment period of up to fourteen days that sufficient research cannot be carried out to produce a meaningful family history, the initial deposit will be refunded in full.

Once substantive research has begun, payments already made are non-refundable.

10. Intellectual Property

All written content produced by Heritage and Lineage remains the intellectual property of Heritage and Lineage until full payment has been received.

Upon full payment, the client receives the right to retain and use the completed work for personal and family purposes.

The work may not be reproduced or commercially distributed without written permission.

11. Privacy and Confidentiality

Heritage and Lineage respects the privacy of clients and treats all personal information and family details with strict confidentiality.

Personal data is processed in accordance with the Privacy Policy and applicable data protection laws including the UK GDPR.

12. Limitation of Liability

Heritage and Lineage shall not be liable for any indirect or consequential loss arising from the use of this website or from genealogical research based on historical records.

Liability for commissioned services shall not exceed the total amount paid by the client for the project.
